Chapter 01

Tonia gives the evening a theme

For the first tasting, Tonia wants a comparison everyone can get into: one vintage, three white grapes. She chooses a Grüner Veltliner, a Chardonnay and a Riesling GG, all from 2022. She puts the bottles on the table in serving order and creates a Wines list called Friday white-wine tasting.

She adds each producer, wine name and vintage from the label. When someone asks which Chardonnay they tasted, “the second bottle” will have a proper name.

Tonia chooses Traditional ranking. → Help She wants each friend to put the three white wines in order: first, second and third. There is no scoring scale to agree on. She records her four friends’ rankings as the host and adds her own choices too. All five people have a say.

One vintage, three white grapes

All three bottles are from 2022. Tonia serves them in this order:

  1. Weingut Mayer am Pfarrplatz · Grüner Veltliner 1ÖTW Ried Schenkenberg-Grinzing 2022
    Wien, Austria.
  2. Erwin Sabathi · Chardonnay Pössnitzberg 2022
    Südsteiermark, Styria, Austria.
  3. Dönnhoff · Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs 2022
    Nahe, Germany.

Three vineyard wines let the group compare Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay and Riesling from the same vintage. This serving order is a suggestion. The rankings in the story are fictional examples and do not describe these bottles’ quality.

Chapter 02

Her friends arrive, without a signup round

Mia, Sam, Alex and Jo. No guest email needed.
Illustrated story scene · real TopX screens are available below.

Mia arrives first. Sam follows with bread, and Alex and Jo are soon pulling up chairs. Tonia wants to start pouring while everyone is together.

She opens People → Add person and creates a named entry for each friend, leaving email empty. Then she adds them as participants on the tasting list. They are her tasting guests: each has a place on the Scoreboard, and Tonia can collect their rankings without asking them to create accounts.

She turns the tablet towards the table. “Tell me your order and I’ll put it into your ballot.” Each friend’s opinion will stay attached to that person.

Chapter 03

Tonia keeps the tasting moving

Tonia records each guest’s first, second and third choice.
Illustrated story scene · real TopX screens are available below.

She pours the Grüner Veltliner, then the Chardonnay, then the Riesling. After tasting all three, each friend decides which they would choose first, second and third.

Tonia opens each guest’s ballot as the owner and puts the wines in the order they give her. On the Scoreboard she can compare the guest columns with the group order, scrolling sideways when she needs to. Before moving a wine, she checks whose ranking she is entering. TopX saves each move automatically.

There is no separate notebook to total up afterwards. The saved rankings are already in the tasting list, ready for the next person’s opinion.

Chapter 04

The favourite changes as the votes arrive

Tonia shows the final result to Mia, Sam, Alex and Jo
Illustrated story scene · real TopX screens are available below.

Mia puts the Dönnhoff Riesling first, the Mayer Grüner Veltliner second and the Sabathi Chardonnay third. Sam prefers Grüner Veltliner, then Chardonnay, then Riesling. His ballot moves Grüner Veltliner to the top of the group order.

Alex puts Chardonnay first. Grüner Veltliner stays in the lead overall, while Chardonnay moves into second. Jo ranks Riesling first, bringing it back into second place in the group order. Tonia then adds her own ranking: Grüner Veltliner first, Riesling second and Chardonnay third. Tonia watches whole wine rows move while the earlier ballots stay unchanged. Grüner Veltliner finishes first, Riesling second and Chardonnay third.

Replay their example below. These rankings are invented for the story and do not represent an actual tasting verdict on the three wines. The example uses TopX’s default Points per place counting method: with three wines, first place contributes three points, second two and third one. Guests submit an order, rather than point-scale scores.

The ranking goes into the group chat

The tasting ends. The result stays.
Illustrated story scene · real TopX screens are available below.

As the evening winds down, someone asks Tonia to send the result. She opens the list’s ⋯ → Share results, chooses when the link should expire and selects Create link. Then she copies Chat summary into their group chat.

The message includes the vote count, top three wines and a link to the latest group ranking. Her friends can open the read-only page without an account.

Tonia checks Show everyone’s ballots before sharing. → Help That switch decides whether the public result also includes guests’ names and individual rankings. She can revoke the link later.

Chapter 06

An evening worth repeating

By the time the glasses are cleared, every friend has had a say. Tonia can look back at the group’s final ranking and the individual choices behind it. The shared link is already in their chat.

The next morning, the replies arrive: they loved the evening. They want to do it again. Tonia is pleased that the list has kept the bottles and votes together, ready to look back on.

Her first TopX tasting is complete: three white wines, five rankings and one shared result.
