How do I add a picture to a list or item?

A list and each of its items can have a picture. Owners of the list (and admins) add, change and remove them. Participants see the pictures but cannot change them.

Open the image dialog

For the list:

• Open the ⋯ menu of the list and choose List image….
• On the list page, tap the button on the corner of the list image. Without an image, tap the drawing with the +.
• In Edit list, on the Basics step, tap Upload, link or find (or Change image) under List image. A new list gets its image once it is created.

For an item:

• Open the item's details and tap Change image. Without an image, tap the drawing with the +.
• Or tap Edit item and use Upload, link or find (or Change image) next to Image.

Choose a picture

The dialog has these tabs:

• Upload: tap Choose a photo or take one. On a phone you can take a photo with the camera.

• Link: paste the picture's address under Image address. TopX copies the image once and keeps the link as its source.

• Find: search an open source for the item's name. Which source TopX searches depends on the category:

  • Movies and TV Series: TMDB
  • Books and Audiobooks: Open Library
  • Albums and Songs: Cover Art Archive
  • Bands, Cities, Wine Trips and Restaurants: Wikimedia Commons
  • Items: Openverse
  • Wines: none, because open sources rarely have wine labels. Take a photo of the bottle, or paste a link.

  For the list image, Find searches Wikimedia Commons for a place or a theme. Each result shows its credit, and TopX shows the credit with the picture.

• Item images: for the list image only, when items already have pictures. Pick one of them.

The preview shows how the picture will look. Tap Save image to store it. TopX shows the whole picture everywhere and fills the rest of the space softly, so nothing is cut off.

Alt text

Alt text is optional and takes up to 200 characters. Describe what the picture shows, for people who cannot see it. You can change the alt text of a saved picture on its own.

Remove a picture

Open the image dialog and tap Remove image. The list or item shows the drawing for its category again.

Limits

• Photos can be JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF or HEIC, up to 5 MB and 4,096 pixels a side. Where your browser can read a larger photo, it makes it smaller before sending it.
• Location and camera data are removed from every photo.
• You can change up to 30 pictures an hour, and a list takes up to 200 picture changes a day.
• You can search with Find up to 60 times an hour.

Without a picture

Every category has its own drawing. An item without a picture shows it. A list without its own picture shows the pictures of its first three items on its card, or the drawing when no item has one. The drawings never open the larger view.
