What happens when items tie?

Items with the same result share a place and are shown as tied. They are not split by chance.

When two or more items end up with exactly the same result, TopX does not pick a winner by chance. They share a place.

What you see

  • Tied items show the same place number. If two items share second place, the next item is fourth.
  • Tied items are listed in alphabetical order. That order says nothing about which one is better.
  • On the podium of a point-scale list, a shared place reads for example =2. If more items share it, the podium shows the number, such as "4 tied", and lists the names below.
  • A tie can use up places. When two items share first place, there is no second place on the podium, and it shows an empty outline instead.

Point-scale lists

The group score is shown with one decimal. Two items tie when their group scores are the same at that precision, so 7.5 and 7.5 tie even if the exact averages differ in the next decimal.

Ranking lists

Items tie when the counting method gives them the same total. A tie is more likely on a short list or when few people have voted. Another ballot usually breaks it.
